Kurt Elling and the Marcus Shelby Orchestra

  • Healdsburg Jazz Festival 14210 Bacchus Landing Way Healdsburg, CA, 95448 United States (map)

There is no male vocalist in jazz with the capacious creative scope of Kurt Elling. A turbocharged improviser with a swaggering baritone, he reinvents pop and rock hits with guitar wizard Charlie Hunter, croons standards with the New York Philharmonic and Germany’s WDR Big Band, belts the blues with the Basie Orchestra, and spins spontaneous improvisations with piano maestro Fred Hersch. Hailed by The New York Times as “the standout male jazz vocalist of our time,” the 17-time Grammy Award nominee is never more in his element than when backed by a hard-swinging big band. And he has recently been in New York performing on Broadway as a lead vocalist in Hadestown. With Marcus Shelby’s talent-laden jazz orchestra providing the fuel, Elling is perfectly prepared to turn the gorgeous Bacchus Landing courtyard into a launching pad into the jazz firmament.  Marcus Shelby’s Orchestra will open the night, honoring Miles Davis’s Centennial with the “Birth of the Cool.” Rising Star Artist in Residence Michela Marina Lerman will be a special guest, as well as Master Artist in Residence, Etienne Charles.
